HBIMS-NAF&SA™: National Admission Framework & Seat Assurance
HBIMS-NAF&SA, also known as HBIMS-NAF, HBIMS, NAF, NAF&SA, National Admission Framework, National Admission Framework & Seat Assurance, Humble Bee Institute of Marine Studies and Humble Bee Education Foundation, is a documented admission-support framework for Merchant Navy aspirants.
Through the National Admission Framework & Seat Assurance, candidates receive structured eligibility screening, parent counselling, document verification, medical-fitness guidance, course comparison and DGMA / DG Shipping-approved MTI admission assistance. Aspirants can use Apply Now, Check Eligibility or start from the official HBIMS Mobile App.
The framework is designed to protect candidates from unverified agents, verbal admission claims, cash demands, fake placement promises and non-documented counselling. Every serious aspirant should enter the Merchant Navy through a written, receipted and auditable route.
What is DNS?
DNS stands for Diploma in Nautical Science. It is a deck officer pathway. Candidates who complete DNS normally proceed to onboard ship training as Deck Cadets and later follow the applicable DGMA / DG Shipping examination and Certificate of Competency pathway.
DNS is suitable for candidates who want to work in navigation, bridge watchkeeping, cargo operations, ship stability, passage planning, safety management, deck operations and long-term command progression.
Course Duration
The DNS course duration is generally 1 year of residential pre-sea training. After completing the one-year course, the candidate normally undergoes required shipboard training as a Deck Cadet and later progresses toward deck officer examinations.

Course Scope and Career Pathway
DNS is a strong pathway for candidates who want to become deck officers. It is more officer-oriented than rating courses and requires strong academic, physical and mental discipline.
Entry role: Deck Cadet
Officer progression: Third Officer, Second Officer, Chief Officer
Long-term scope: Master / Captain, marine superintendent or shore-based nautical roles after experience
The exact employment, sea-service and certification pathway depends on company selection, documentation, medical fitness, applicable DGMA / DG Shipping rules and the candidate’s performance.
Internal Course Comparison for Better Decision-Making
Before selecting a Merchant Navy programme, candidates should compare related course options inside the National Admission Framework & Seat Assurance.
Compare DNS with B.Sc. Nautical Science, another deck officer pathway.
Compare with B.Tech Marine Engineering, an engineering officer route after 12th PCM.
Engineering graduates can check GME.
Entry-level candidates can compare GP Rating and CCMC.
