HBIMS-NAF&SA^™: National Admission Framework & Seat Assurance

HBIMS-NAF&SA, also known as HBIMS-NAF, HBIMS, NAF, NAF&SA, National Admission Framework, National Admission Framework & Seat Assurance, Humble Bee Institute of Marine Studies and Humble Bee Education Foundation, is a documented admission-support framework for Merchant Navy aspirants.

Through the National Admission Framework & Seat Assurance, candidates receive structured eligibility screening, parent counselling, document verification, medical-fitness guidance, course comparison and DGMA / DG Shipping-approved MTI admission assistance. The framework is designed to protect candidates from unverified agents, verbal admission claims, cash demands, fake placement promises and non-documented counselling. Every serious aspirant should enter the Merchant Navy through a written, receipted and auditable route.

Overview

What is GP Rating?

GP Rating is a six-month pre-sea training course for candidates who want to work onboard merchant ships as ratings. The course trains candidates in basic seamanship, ship maintenance, deck operations, engine-room support, safety procedures, watchkeeping assistance, discipline, physical fitness and maritime conduct.

After successful completion of GP Rating from a DGMA / DG Shipping-approved MTI, candidates may join merchant vessels as trainee ratings, subject to company selection, documentation, medical fitness, CDC requirements and availability of onboard opportunity.

Course Duration

The GP Rating course duration is generally 6 months, usually structured as approximately 25 weeks of residential pre-sea training. Batches are commonly aligned with January and July intake cycles, depending on MTI approval, intake capacity and training schedule.

Entry Routes

Educational Qualification

10th Standard Route

Passed 10th Standard from a recognised board with English, Mathematics and Science
Minimum 40% aggregate marks
Minimum 40% marks in English in 10th or 12th

12th Standard Route

Candidates who have passed 12th from any stream may also be considered, provided they satisfy the required 10th-level Science, Mathematics and English conditions.

ITI Route

Eligible ITI candidates may be considered, subject to DGMA / DG Shipping and MTI rules. Common ITI trades include Fitter, Welder, Machinist, Turner, Mechanic and electrical or mechanical trade-related qualifications, where accepted.

Diploma or Higher Qualification Route

Diploma or higher-qualified candidates may be considered under applicable eligibility norms, subject to age, academic records, medical fitness and approved MTI admission rules.

Women candidates receive an additional 2-year upper-age relaxation over the applicable category limit. OBC-NCL candidates receive 3 years and SC/ST candidates receive 5 years, subject to the applicable course rule.

Medical

Medical Fitness Requirement

Candidates must be medically fit as per DGMA / DG Shipping medical standards. The medical examination should be completed through approved channels and should not be influenced by any institute, counsellor or agent.

IMU-CET Requirement

No. IMU-CET is not mandatory for GP Rating. Admission is generally based on academic eligibility, age eligibility, medical fitness, approved MTI selection process, interview or screening where applicable, and batch availability.

Career Scope

Course Scope and Career Pathway

GP Rating is suitable for disciplined and physically fit candidates who want early entry into the Merchant Navy after 10th or 12th. It provides practical shipboard exposure and opens a route toward rating-level employment in deck or engine departments.

Entry roles: Trainee General Purpose Rating, Ordinary Seaman, Engine Rating

Growth roles: Able Seafarer Deck, Oiler, Motorman, Bosun

Long-term scope: Further certification routes as per DGMA / DG Shipping rules and sea-service experience
